Timorese Textile Exhibition

Timor, one of the 556 islands that comprise the Indonesian
province of East Nusa Tenggara, is noted for its distinctive
textiles such as warp-faced ikat and other fabrics made of
home-grown, handspun cotton with naturalistic motifs and geometric
patterns. These textiles are still being made on the island by
women using back strap loom and other age-old tools and techniques.
Manami Okazaki first became intrigued with the beauty of this
traditional craft 10 years ago and has traveled regularly to
Timor ever since. To mark Babaghuri’s second anniversary,
we will hold an exhibition of Timorese textiles consisting of
100 textile works and 50 woven bags collected by Okazaki over the
years, as well as 30 photographs taken by Okazaki. All items will
be available for purchase.We invite you to come and take a look.
